Caring for a parent on dialysis, at home in Riyadh
Three sessions a week does not sound like much until you are the one driving him, waiting four hours, bringing him home and then watching him sleep the rest of the day.
Signs it may be time for help
- 1
The trip to the centre has become the hardest part of the week.
- 2
He is flat and dizzy for a full day after every session.
- 3
Fluid and salt limits are being guessed at rather than followed.
- 4
Swollen ankles, breathlessness, or weight jumping between sessions.
- 5
A family member is taking three mornings a week off work.
What care at home actually looks like
Dialysis takes the day. The care that matters happens on either side of it.
He is ready and out on time, with his bag, his notes and something to eat afterwards, and someone with him for the journey and the wait.
Coming home is slow on purpose — sitting before standing, fluids only within his limit, and someone watching for the dizziness that turns into a fall.
Meals through the week respect the fluid and salt limits without turning the kitchen into a hospital, and what he drank and ate is written down.
And on the good days he is not treated like a patient. He is helped out of the chair and into the rest of his life.
How our carers are trained for this
Getting to and from the centre
Ready on time, accompanied through the session, and brought home safely.
Fluid and salt limits
Cooking and drinks kept inside the limits his doctor set, recorded rather than estimated.
The day after a session
Managing the tiredness and low blood pressure, and preventing the fall it can cause.
Warning signs
Swelling, breathlessness, weight change and access-site problems — reported the same day.
What it costs
Most families book the dialysis days plus the morning after. Access sites, wounds and medication need a licensed nurse; transport, meals, monitoring of fluids and daily support do not. The assessment is free.
